What if men took off their armour? What if they could talk about their insecurities? What if they were allowed to cry in public?
Noticing a resistance amongst my male-identifying peers to expose their fears and fragility, I began examining the stigmatization of emotionality. When I initiated a photo series celebrating vulnerability amongst young men, the response was overwhelming. Within one day of posting a call for participants, I had over 20 individuals asking to be a part of the project.
What would it look like if we changed the story around masculine expression? What would it look like if they could take off everything protecting them and let someone into their space? What would it look like if they could relax and breathe and let everyone see everything they were told to hide?
I Cry Too was exhibited at Union Gallery in Ontario, Canada and was published in Queen’s University’s The Undergraduate Review, Vol. XXXII
